That’s right, Sharks teeth are one the best free souvenirs of a summer beach vacation. Here are some tips on how you can find them!
WHEN TO LOOK: Like many things in life when It comes to finding shark’s teeth, the Early bird gets the worm. Tidal changes at night stir up sediment from the bottom of the ocean, causing shells and shark teeth that may have been buried for years to resurface. Get up early and beat the crowds for a better chance at finding sharks’ teeth. Large storms may also increase your odds of finding shark teeth. Storms and high winds create large waves that stir up even more sediment than an average daily tide.
If you don’t feel like waking up early on your vacation check out a tidal chart for the area and start your shark tooth search right before or after a high tide. Focus your search on shell beds.
WHERE TO LOOK: With 60 Miles of coastline on the Grand Strand sharks’ teeth could be anywhere. Many locals say the best location in Myrtle Beach to find sharks’ teeth is central myrtle beach, 50th AVE North – 10th AVE South.
The Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park are also great places to search because these beaches are typically less crowded than other parts of the beach. Huntington Beach State Park even offers a guide to seashells in their park office!
HOW TO IDENTIFY A SHARKS TOOTH: You want to start your hunt by looking for shiny, triangular, black things in the sand. However, this doesn’t always mean you have found a tooth. Try to identify a matte black gum line at the top of the tooth, this is a great indicator of if you have a shell or a tooth. Lastly, apply some pressure to the tooth, most sharks’ teeth are extremely durable. If it doesn’t break in half, chances are you have found yourself a shark’s tooth!
